New Adventures

I led the library’s monthly mystery book club this morning.  There’s usually only one attendee, which should make me sad.  It doesn’t make me sad though, because that one attendee is fantastic.  She and her husband (who will henceforth be known as Lady and Husband) totally made my day, and not in the Clint Eastwood kind of way.

Lady and I talked about sociopaths for a while, specifically Tom Ripley in The Talented Mr. Ripley, this month’s book.  After that, we veered into a conversation about Inception and science fiction and her accidental run-in with Dragon*Con last year.  She and Husband were in Atlanta for the Virginia Tech/Alabama football game, and they kept seeing Batman and all sorts of cartoon/fantasy characters walking around town.  They ended up going to the Dragon*Con parade when they figured out what was going on, and Lady is actually hoping to attend the convention on purpose this year.  How fun is that?!

It might be important to note that Lady and Husband are in their 60’s or 70’s.  The exciting thing about them isn’t that they like graphic novels or new thriller movies.  The awesome factor is that they’re driving cross-country for football games, checking out the latest in teenage book crazes, and staying on top of pop culture without actually trying to be cool.  They’re learning things the fun way and actively pursuing mini-adventures together.  I love that about them.

Oh, I almost forgot the best part.  Husband joined us after a while and prodded Lady to tell me about their plans for an upcoming trip to the Asheville area.  Drum roll, please.  They’re going on a zip line route that takes you from the side of one mountain, over a valley, and ends on another mountainside.  I so want to be like these people when I’m 60 or 70.

I’m also happy to report that my adventuring hasn’t ended yet.  I found a willing and able partner in travel crime last night, so we’re actively daydreaming about taking a trip next year.  Potentially a trip to Eastern Europe or South America.

Are you on board yet?  Croatia thinks you should be.

Also, the links provided in this post give background information if you don’t know your Clint Eastwood quotes, what the heck Dragon*Con is, or all the dirt on new movies.
